Mr. Shajal Mehedi has been working as Research Associate in the Climate Change and Disaster Management Division of the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) since April, 2021 after his graduation from the Department of Water Resources Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He has more than three years of experience in the field of water resources engineering, climate change downscaling, climate change risk, vulnerabilities, impacts assessment, disaster risk reduction, hydrologic and hydro-dynamic assessment, modeling and design, spatial analysis, environmental impact assessment. Over these years, he has been involved in numerous studies, offering his expert input across a wide spectrum of areas of interest while demonstrating multitasking abilities.
Mr. Mehedi is well-versed in industry-related softwares like HEC-RAS, SWAT, SWAT-CUP, SDSM, SOBEK, ArcGIS, MATLAB, AUTOCAD, HEC-HMS, MODFLOW etc. He has developed hydrologic model for Ghaghat River Basin using SWAT and calibrated and validated the model using SWAT-CUP and generated discharge data for Ghaghat River under different climate change scenarios. He has also developed hydrodynamic model using HEC-RAS for Langolerhat Bridge over Ghaghat River and Khaliajhuri Bridge over Dhanu River and determined hydraulic parameters of bridge. He also updated flood model of North-West hydraulic model using SOBEK and calibrated and validated the model. He has also good command over downscaling climate data using Statistical Downscaling Model (SDSM) and assessing local climate change impacts.
He has vast experience in assessing climate change risk and vulnerabilities applying both scientific and participatory approach following IPCC’s AR5 and AR6. He was involved with city level climate vulnerability and risk assessment along with climate risk and vulnerability assessment on fisheries and aquaculture, forestry, agriculture etc. sector in Bangladesh. He was engaged in preparing working paper on monitoring and evaluation of National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and mainstreaming climate change into development process under “Formulation and Advancement of National Adaptation Plan Process in Bangladesh” project. He has worked with various national and international organizations, development partners, NGOs and INGOs like UNDP, ADB, FAO, World Bank, IHE, GIZ, PKSF etc.
Furthermore, he has hands-on experiences in facilitating and conducting numerous workshops, seminars, national level dialogue, attending and mobilizing field visits. He has also received several training and certifications in hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling, groundwater management and modeling, basic remote sensing application, capacity building on climate change integration into development process etc. He has also experiences in conducting training session on “Identifying Adaptation Option for Climate Resilience” as a trainer.
Mr. Mehedi is now intensively engaged in designing climate resilient flash flood protection measures for selective Haatis in Sunamganj, climate risk and adaptation/restoration options assessment in selected watersheds of CHT, landslide risk profile development for hill side Road Network of Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban Hill District, coastal vulnerability index assessment, climate change risk assessment in Meghna Basin, climate induced loss and damage framework development etc.
